Halos from the Plane
After taking off, the plane passed through the thick clouds and reached above the clouds. Looking at the sun, a rainbow-like Buddha light appeared around the shadow of the plane.
Buddha light is a kind of "solar halo". When the sun shines on the surface of the cloud and fog, it forms a natural wonder of Buddha light through diffraction and diffuse reflection. Sunlight casts shadows on clouds, where tiny ice crystals and water droplets form a unique circular rainbow. It is a diffraction phenomenon formed when the strong sunlight hits the surface of the cloud and fog in gloomy weather. The appearance of the "Buddha's Light" spectacle in nature requires the combination of many natural factors such as sunlight, terrain and sea of clouds, so it is relatively rare. Therefore, Buddhists believe that Buddha's light is the light brought by Buddha.
When the aircraft is very close to the cloud layer with a very flat upper surface, it is easy to observe the Buddha's light phenomenon in the direction of the backlight. As long as the light is strong, the cloud droplets have a small radius and a uniform size, and generally you can see multiple halos with different brightness levels but the same color arrangement. After the plane gradually rose and got away from the clouds, the Buddha's light ring gradually expanded, and the color became lighter, making it difficult to be observed.
